In 1958 Alan worked as an aircraft fitter in Luton, in his spare time he called on factories selling tools and equipment from a wheelbarrow. He progressed initially to a market stall before later that year opening his first shop supplying mainly Government surplus tools and equipment. In 1962 Alan moved to Darlington finding premises in Clifton Road.
